  • The Link Between Food + Mental Health

Food can have so many different meanings across cultures, traditions, families, countries, or within friend groups. We receive soooo much information on what, how, and when to eat; how it should look like, what we should look like. These messages associated with food can be detrimental to our overall well-being. Let's think of the basics: Food represents nourishment and growth. We need food in order to continue to survive and thrive, just as our ancestors did. So how do we approach what we put into our bodies as something that is going to heal us vs. harm us? When you are chronically stressed, your body depletes itself of proper nutrients, your blood sugars are out of whack, you may experience dizziness, anxiety, panic, confusion, or shakiness. Many of these symptoms get mistaken as strictly medical, but there is a direct link with the mental health side of things too! If you are always consuming foods high in sugar and experience frequent anxiety, difficulty sleeping, or panic attacks it may be time to stop and take a closer look at how the foods you are consuming are directly linked to your mental health symptoms and presentation. Here are some tips to follow when it comes to the building blocks of mental wellness + nutrition: ✨Nourish the first brain (aka your actual brain) Eat good, healthy fats because your brain is made up of 60% of fat! ✨Nourish the second brain (aka your gut) Include fiber + fermented foods into your diet. ✨Practice mindfulness Don't eat when stressed. Slow down. Chew slowly. Notice when your body is alerting you that you are actually hungry. ✨Notice the symptoms Reflect - is this an emotion coming up for me right now that's connected to how I feel or am I truly hungry? Also think about that headache you may get - what did you eat before your head started to hurt? How often are these headaches happening? Is there a link between what you are eating the symptoms? ✨Integrative behavioral change strategies Talking through your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can be KEY in changing attitudes and habits surrounding food and symptoms experienced. ✨Read the labels So important! Read what products you buy have in them as additives can impact hormones and other allergens. ✨Eat the rainbow Consume nutrient-dense foods that are the color of the rainbow! • The Sacral Chakra + Mental Health

Our chakras are energy centers in which when they are blocked, there is disruptions in our physical and mental health. It is important to notice when these shifts occur so that we may tend to them and release what's been blocked or weighing us down. When the sacral chakra is blocked, we experience both physical and mental health concerns and feel confused as to what is happening to us. We may feel joint pain and think it is arthritis or impact from a strenuous activity. We may experience intense anxiety or insecurity, and may not know why. It is important to combine both mind + body to examine what the root cause is to make not only a sound conclusion, but know how to help ourselves. In order to create harmony with our sacral chakra, we can meditate, practice yoga, connect with the ocean or another body of water, use essential oils, and practice affirmations. Through these practices we can release and break up the blockages that have been created in this energy center. The blockage of the chakra may have occurred overtime until the symptoms manifested. So you may have been feeling okay for a few weeks...few months.. and then BOOM... you begin to feel anxious, guilty, resentful, start to have back and joint pain...out of nowhere. It may be your sacral chakra trying to tell you something. Just listen and look a little bit closer.

MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING WELLNESS SHOP RESOURCES WELLNESS PROGRAMS MIND-BODY SERVICES testimonials. I love the products that are carried in The Wellness Shop! It is wonderful to know that someone spends the time researching and testing out the products that are sold before they are offered to the community. I really can't pick a favorite product so far - I love everything! The Unplugged Social Media Detox program blew me away. I did not realize how much social media has impacted me to the extent that it did. After this program, I totally had a mindset shift. Highly recommended and can be done on your own time if you are a busy mom like me! Alicia's approach to counseling is so different than other therapists I have gone to in the past. She has so much knowledge in other areas, not just psychology which really sets her apart from other providers I have gone to. Alicia helps to find the root concern of what you have been struggling with, which has made a HUGE difference in how I see myself, feel, and now live my life. Dealing with the pandemic brought me so much anxiety and the fear that I did not know what I would do if I did not have Alicia's support. She was able to teach me tools to use outside of the appointments and remind me that I am capable of getting through whatever comes my way....and I most definitely have. evolving into motherhood: anxiety + depression support for new mothers BEGINS FEBRUARY 2022.
